Whether you're a UK-based VAT-registered business or an overseas buyer looking to import a vehicle from the UK, discover how VAT-qualifying cars work and the potential savings they offer when purchased for business use or export.
WHAT DOES VAT-QUALIFYING MEAN?
A VAT-qualifying vehicle was initially purchased by a VAT-registered business and had VAT charged at the point of sale. As long as that VAT hasn't been reclaimed and the vehicle has remained within a VAT-qualifying ownership chain, the car retains its VAT-qualifying status.
If you're a VAT-registered business or are exporting outside the UK, buying a VAT-qualifying car means you could be eligible to reclaim the 20% VAT, significantly reducing your overall cost.
HOW CAN I TELL IF A CAR IS VAT-QUALIFYING?
A vehicle is VAT-qualifying if:
- A VAT-registered company initially purchased it
- VAT was charged and not reclaimed
- It has remained in a VAT-qualifying chain of ownership
- It comes with a valid VAT invoice at the point of sale
If VAT has been reclaimed previously, or a valid VAT invoice cannot be provided, the vehicle is no longer VAT-qualifying.
At Beck Evans, all VAT-qualifying vehicles are clearly marked and have the correct documentation to ensure transparency and eligibility for VAT reclaim.
VAT-QUALIFYING CAR BENEFITS

- Perfect for business use: Especially for fleets, commercial, or company vehicles
- Export-friendly: VAT doesn't apply to eligible non-UK/non-EU exports
- Better value: Lower total cost when reclaiming VAT or exporting tax-free
WHO BENEFITS FROM VAT-QUALIFYING CARS?
We work with both UK-based VAT-registered buyers and international customers.
Here's how VAT-qualifying vehicles apply to each:
For UK VAT-registered businesses
If you're VAT-registered in the UK and plan to use the vehicle exclusively for business purposes, you may be able to reclaim the 20% VAT on your purchase through your HMRC VAT return, lowering your total vehicle cost.
At Beck Evans, we supply a wide range of VAT-qualifying vehicles ideal for business needs. Whatever your sector or size, our expert team can help you find the right vehicle and provide the necessary VAT invoice for reclaim.
Businesses that benefit include:
- Limited companies & sole traders
- Trades & construction firms
- Delivery & logistics companies
- Chauffeurs & private hire operators
- Agricultural & rural businesses
For export customers (Outside the UK/EU)
If you're buying a vehicle from overseas and exporting it outside the UK and EU, the 20% VAT doesn't apply, meaning you purchase the car VAT-free.
At Beck Evans, we specialise in selling prestige and performance high-quality VAT-qualifying vehicles to customers worldwide. Whether you're an individual buyer or a business, we offer a full end-to-end export service to make the process smooth, fast, and fully compliant.

*For export sales, the actual cost savings depends on various factors, including the prevailing exchange rate, car price, shipping expenses, local taxes, and administrative fees. In certain instances, cost savings might not be realised when compared to local purchases. Got a different question? No probs, just drop us an email at [email protected]
Are Beck Evans vehicles all VAT-qualifying?
No, our dealership offers a mixture of VAT-qualifying and non-VAT-qualifying cars. While we have a wide selection of VAT-qualifying vehicles available, we also cater to customers who may have different requirements. It's easy to identify one of our VAT-qualifying cars as we clearly state this within the vehicle description.
Are VAT-qualifying cars more expensive?
Not necessarily. While some VAT-qualifying cars may be high-value models, the VAT status itself does not make them more expensive. However, being able to reclaim VAT can reduce the effective cost for VAT-registered buyers.
Can you claim VAT on a car?
Yes, VAT-registered individuals or businesses can claim the VAT on VAT-qualifying cars if the vehicle is used exclusively for business purposes. Additionally, export customers can benefit from VAT savings when purchasing a VAT-qualifying car for export outside the UK and EU, even if they are not VAT-registered.
