EXPORTING CARS TO NEW ZEALAND
LEARN ABOUT OUR STREAMLINED PROCESS AND WHAT SETS US APART
We sell and export the very best VAT-qualifying vehicles, from bespoke sourcing to seamless shipping to New Zealand.
DELIVERING EXCELLENCE EVERY STEP OF THE WAY
Importing a car from the UK to New Zealand is an exciting opportunity, giving you access to a wide selection of high-quality vehicles at competitive prices. While factors such as customs duties and entry certification may seem complex, Beck Evans is here to guide you through each step with ease.
At Beck Evans, we're leaders in selling and exporting high-quality, high-performance, prestige, 4x4, and commercial VAT-qualifying vehicles. We also offer unique services like car sourcing, and you find it, we export it - giving you access to your dream vehicle and hidden gems that aren't readily available in New Zealand.
The benefits of VAT-qualifying vehicles
Importing a VAT-qualifying vehicle from Beck Evans provides an opportunity to access high-quality vehicles at competitive prices. The right approach helps reduce costs* and simplify the import process.
Why VAT matters
When purchasing a vehicle in the UK, VAT (Value Added Tax) of 20% is typically included in the price. However, if you're exporting the vehicle to New Zealand, VAT-qualifying vehicles can be sold VAT-free, meaning you may save thousands on your purchase.
Maximise your savings
By opting for a VAT-qualifying vehicle from Beck Evans, you benefit from a more cost-effective import. These vehicles have never had UK VAT applied - typically because they were owned by VAT-registered businesses or leasing companies. When exported to New Zealand, they can be sold without the 20% VAT, making the process more affordable for you.
Why Choose Beck Evans?
Most UK dealers don't specialise in car exports and may not have the expertise to offer VAT-qualifying vehicles VAT-free for export. At Beck Evans, we go the extra mile to make importing your dream car to New Zealand simple and cost-effective.
Unlike many dealers, we don't require you to pay the 20% UK VAT upfront. Instead, we cover it for you and handle the entire VAT reclaim process, taking the complexity and paperwork hassle off your hands. With our expert team managing every step, you can focus on enjoying your new vehicle with complete peace of mind.
*Important Note: The actual cost savings depend on various factors, including exchange rates, vehicle prices, shipping fees, local taxes, and administrative costs. In some cases, savings may not be realised compared to local purchases. For accurate, tailored advice, contact our export specialists for a personalised quote.

Shipping options
There are two main shipping methods to suit your needs:

- Container Shipping: This option provides more security, allowing you to ship personal belongings along with your vehicle. A 40-foot container can even accommodate two vehicles, reducing overall shipping costs per vehicle.
Shipping delivery time
Shipping takes around 6-8 weeks, depending on the shipping line and port schedules.
Shipping destinations
We ship vehicles to major ports across New Zealand, providing wide coverage to meet your needs.
Common destinations include:
- Auckland
- Christchurch
- Wellington
- Lyttleton
- Tauranga
- Napier
- Port Chalmers
- Nelson
We recommend contacting our team for an accurate estimate and tailored details to your export needs.
Entry Certification
The Importance of Entry Certification
All vehicles entering New Zealand must undergo entry certification before they can be used on the road. This thorough process, conducted by certifiers appointed by Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency), ensures that your vehicle complies with New Zealand's safety and emissions standards. It involves verifying that the vehicle meets frontal impact and exhaust emissions standards, inspecting its condition, certifying roadworthiness, and confirming ownership and identity through a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
Entry certification takes place after the vehicle arrives in New Zealand and has successfully passed border inspection, customs, and biosecurity clearance. Once the vehicle is released to the importer, it must undergo entry certification to ensure it meets all necessary standards before it can be registered and legally driven on New Zealand roads.
After your vehicle passes entry certification, you'll receive a registration application form (MR2A) and, depending on the type of vehicle, either a Warrant of Fitness (WoF) or Certificate of Fitness.
Our export process ensures that every step is taken care of, guiding you through to a successful entry certification pass.
Vehicle Classes Requiring Certification
The following used vehicles require entry certification if they are to be driven on New Zealand roads:
- Light vehicles (up to 3,500kg)
- Mopeds and motorcycles (Classes LA, LB, LC, LD, LE)
- Passenger vehicles with nine or fewer seats, including forward control and off-road vehicles (Classes MA, MB, MC)
- Light goods vehicles (Class NA)
- Light buses with more than nine seats (Classes MD1, MD2)
- Heavy vehicles, including buses, trucks, and trailers (Classes MD3, MD4, ME, NB, NC, TC, TD)
Customs, duty, and tax
New Zealand imposes Goods and Services Tax (GST) at 15% of the landed value (the cost of the vehicle plus shipping and insurance). Import duties generally do not apply to private motor vehicles or motorcycles. However, motorhomes and caravans incur a 10% import duty.
If you meet certain conditions, such as being a first-time immigrant or a returning resident, you may qualify for an exemption from GST, provided that you sign an agreement not to sell the vehicle for two years.
Our shipping partner or local agent will be happy to answer any further questions you may have regarding customs, duties, and taxes.
Preparing your vehicle for shipment
Before shipment, your vehicle must undergo a thorough cleaning to pass biosecurity inspections by New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Both the exterior and interior will be inspected for soil, plant material, insects, and pests. Any contamination could result in the vehicle being quarantined and cleaned at your expense.
Don't worry - we've got this covered. We ensure your vehicle receives a rigorous clean to meet biosecurity standards and avoid any potential delays.
Car transportation
We offer reliable and secure car transportation services, ensuring your vehicle is safely delivered to the UK port.
- Collection & delivery: Your vehicle is carefully collected from our dealership and transported securely to the port, ensuring it reaches its destination in perfect condition.
- Fully insured: Every vehicle is fully insured during transportation, giving you peace of mind every step of the way.
What you will receive in the post
- Up-to-date service history
- HPI certification (verifying mileage and no serious damage history)
- Manufacturer's book pack
- Bill of Lading
- Locking wheel nut (if applicable)
- Spare key
- V5 Logbook
Arrival in New Zealand
The following is an overview of one of our partners' processes to give you a clear idea of how things will work. Please note that procedures may vary slightly depending on the partner.
Upon arrival, it typically takes about four days to transport and unpack your vehicle and clear it through customs. During this time, the vehicle will also be inspected for mud and plant material on the underside, which could pose environmental risks in New Zealand.
It's important to know that around 95% of vehicles imported into New Zealand require cleaning to meet biosecurity standards. We handle this cleaning promptly to ensure your vehicle passes inspection without delays.
Once the inspections are completed and customs charges are finalised, you will receive an invoice. After payment is made, your vehicle will be delivered to a compliance centre for further inspection to ensure it meets New Zealand's safety standards.
Compliance and Registration
Your vehicle will be transported to a compliance centre for entry certification, which the shipping company typically chooses. However, if you have a preferred location, we can arrange to have your vehicle assessed there instead.
All necessary documentation will be sent to the compliance centre before your vehicle arrives. This includes:
- The purchase invoice
- Vehicle registration
- Bill of lading
The compliance process usually takes about two days, but we recommend reaching out to the centre directly to confirm the timeframe, as there may be a waiting list.
Assuming your vehicle passes without any issues, you will need to pay approximately 450-500 NZD, plus GST, directly to the compliance centre.
You will then receive an MR2A certificate to take to your nearest vehicle registration office. After paying the registration fee, you will be issued registration papers and license plates, which the compliance team will affix to your vehicle.
Once completed, you're ready to drive away and enjoy your new car in New Zealand!

How much is import duty on cars from the UK?
New Zealand doesn't charge specific import duties on vehicles, but you will pay:
- 15% GST on the combined value of the car, shipping, and insurance.
- Additional fees if the car doesn't meet emissions or safety standards.
Is it worth importing a car to NZ?
It depends on the vehicle and personal circumstances. Importing is often worth it for:
- High-value or rare cars
- Vehicles that are cheaper to buy in the UK
- VAT-qualifying vehicles, where you save the 20% UK VAT.
However, factors such as compliance, shipping, and potential repair costs determine if importing is cost-effective compared to buying locally.
Can I import classic cars into NZ?
Yes, classic cars can be imported, but they must:
- Meet NZ's safety and emissions standards (special exemptions may apply)
- Be over 20 years old to qualify for "special interest vehicle" exemptions
Beck Evans can help you find the perfect classic car through our car sourcing services, ensuring it meets New Zealand's import requirements. Contact us to learn more about how we can assist in sourcing and importing your dream classic car.
