Smart tips for safe winter driving

Driving in the winter is a very different experience from the lazy days of summer – with many challenges facing even the most experienced motorists. Whether we have a white Christmas or a damp December, getting the right kit and knowledge will ensure you enjoy and protect your car in the harshest weather.

It's time to treat your car and the road with more respect, so you're ready for hazards like rain, ice and snow. Your car can handle challenging weather if you're willing to take care of it, and here's what you need to do:
  • Service your car. Stay confident with a car that's ready for anything by taking it for a service. Apart from spotting any major problems, a service ensures you don't spend time checking things like anti-freeze, oil and windscreen wipers over the colder months.
  • Invest in winter tyres. Most cars in the UK are fitted with summer tyres, meaning they're not supple enough to grip the road in cold weather. Their extra-deep treads ensure you don't get stuck in snow, so your car is ready for any scenario.
  • Drive with an all-weather kit. Keep winter essentials like screen wash, ice scrapers, a torch, blankets and de-icer in the boot for peace of mind and convenience every day.

Get the knowledge

Winter needn't spoil your driving experience, as long as you have the knowledge and the skills to take on the road.

Planning is first on your list. Leave extra time for your journeys in the winter, even those you know well, to ensure stress-free driving and reduce strain on your car. More time also means you can clear ice and snow before you drive off.

Check the weather and traffic reports, and use your sat-nav to plan alternative, safer or quicker routes to get you where you need to be.

Your car has the power to drive fast, but you should take it easy in the winter! It's tempting to drive as fast as you can (and are allowed!) but skidding and causing an accident isn't what you want from any day. Slow down, your car and other motorists will thank you for it!

What should you do if you skid or slide? Keep calm and retain your grip. Don't brake or accelerate and steer into the skid. This feels counter-intuitive but your car will grip and remain on the road.

Arm yourself with the knowledge to drive in all weathers you'll enjoy your car well into the depths of winter.
